Tips for stocking your lake / second home

At Lake Home Accessories we realize how important it is to spend time enjoying your second home.  After all, do you really want to feel like you have to pack like you are going on vacation, or moving every time you visit you second home?  We have found that a little forethought goes along way in helping you enjoy your time and eliminating frustration at your home away from home.

Here are several tips to help make your stay comfortable and easy to enjoy:

  1. Keep a few sets of comfortable and easy to maintain clothing for each person stored at the home.  Be sure to include swimming suits, shoes (sneakers, sandals and water shoes) and appropriate outer wear for chilly days and evenings.  Don't forget an umbrella and/or a raincoat or suit.

  2. Stock the cabinets with your favorite canned and dry goods.   Don't forget any basic spices or condiments.  If you have a freezer, a few TV dinners, or prepared frozen foods are also a good idea for those times you do not want to cook.  Depending upon the frequency you visit your second home, you may wish to keep a small supply of perishable items that have extended shelf life in your refrigerator such as catsup, mustard, mayonnaise ...

  3. Leave a set of basic toiletries (toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo, hairbrush, soap, sunscreen ...) at your second home.  If you stay there often, you might want to include an expanded inventory of toiletry items to leave on site such as a hairdryer, make up for ladies, razors ...).  Consider keeping some over the counter medications at your second home and a small amount of any prescription medications that you may need.  Always take note of expiration dates on these items.  Keep basic first aid items stocked such as hydrogen peroxide, antibiotic ointment and band aids.

  4. Buy a set of basic tools like screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, and a hammer and leave them for when they are needed.  Also keep basic plumbing supplies like Teflon tape and spare parts for the toilet on hand.  A few spare light bulbs are also nice to have.

  5. Place a few plants that can live within the sunlight and temperature ranges in the house and use our plant watering device to keep them watered when you are away.  The plants will help reduce musty odors.

  6. Keep a set of basic cleaning supplies on hand such as window cleaner, dishwashing detergent, bleach, laundry detergent, and furniture polish.

  7. Keep a few books, movies,  board games and puzzles on hand for days when the weather keeps you indoors.  Don't forget to keep a few indoor and outdoor toys at your vacation home if you have children staying there.

  8. Keep a notepad in a prominent place and make a list of the items you need to add or replenish and take it home with you each time.  This will save you many trips to the store so that you can spend more time relaxing.

  9. Keep bath towels, wash cloths, kitchen towels, beach towels at the home and launder them there if you have a washer and dryer.  This will greatly reduce the amount of items that you carry back and forth each time you visit.

  10. Calculate cost savings for buying supplies for both homes in larger quantities.  You may find that the money saved will greatly reduce the cost of keeping a supply of needed items at your second home.
